Workshop approaches

January 25, 2010

Greetings from my first mobile posting. The new Blackberry is proving to be very practical and straightforward to use. If it goes well with wordpress, please expect to see more posts on the hoof.

So the workshop is nearly here – how exciting is that? We still have places left, so do get in touch if you’d like to attend. It’s going to be an excellent morning and I’m really looking forward to working with Chris. I know he’ll be a bit embarrassed by this, but he really is a local legend.

Try and get there for 10:45 if possible. You may also have difficulty with a satnav or google maps: it’s a new centre that’s been open a year; maps frequently show (I know this is an issue with google) the old entrance. This was on a different street and no longer exists. So aim for Cerau lane on the Cowbridge Rd West end and turn in there (just at the police station) and you’ see the big white building tucked in there on left.

It’s a shiny new leisure centre, and we’re in the dance studio – clean wooden floors, lots of natural light and plenty of yoga equipment!

Looking forward to seeing you there,

Happy New Decade!

January 1, 2010

For those of you who want to make fundamental changes to their lives this year, here’s a resolution for you (or a challenge). Either way) you are hereby cordially invited to join me in a daily yoga routine:

- 10 minutes a day, every day. Thats all.

Oh, and get to a class when you can. With a teacher you trust.

And just see what comes from it: time spent out of your head and into your body. That’s the key… Trust me, it’s greater than the sum of its parts. Well, that’s been my experience.

The 4 mind changers

December 28, 2009

By Kalu Rinpoche

I
I have been blessed with a life in which I can do many things to further my own happiness & the happiness of those around me.

II
Life is short, there is no time to waste.

III
The journey thru life isn’t supposed to be easy, it’s supposed to be real.

IV
Our karma is the one thing we carry with us always.

Autobiography in 5 Chapters

December 28, 2009

From the Tibetan book of living & dying.

1) I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I fall in.
I am lost…I am hopeless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

2) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I’m in the same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

3) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in…it’s a habit.
My eyes are open: I know exactly where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

4) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

5) I walk down another street.

Free yourself from oppression by technology

December 27, 2009

“THE age of melancholy” is how psychologist Daniel Goleman describes our era. People today experience more depression than previous generations, despite the technological wonders that help us every day. It might be because of them.

Our lifestyles are increasingly driven by technology. Phones, computers and the internet pervade our days. There is a constant, nagging need to check for texts and email, to update Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn profiles, to acquire the latest notebook or 3G cellphone.

Are we being served by these technological wonders or have we become enslaved by them?…

How did this arise, and what is it doing to us? In this era of mass consumption, we are surrounded by advertising that urges us to find fulfilment through the acquisition of material goods. As a result, adults and children increasingly believe that in order to belong and feel good about themselves, they must own the latest model or gadget.

Yet research by psychologist Tim Kasser of Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, has shown that people who place a high value on material goals are unhappier than those who are less materialistic. Materialism is also associated with lower self-esteem, greater narcissism, greater tendency to compare oneself unfavourably with other people, less empathy and more conflict in relationships…

Not that I’m under pressure, but…

December 3, 2009

…A little bit busy.

Apologies on the lack of current posts…I’ve recently presented at ‘Devolution and Divergence’ conference – what a buzz. An excellent insight into the workings of academia. Fingers crossed other opportunities come out of it. Now, I need to do a presentation for placement and settle down and get my dissertation down (and a fair amount of other school work).

In the meantime, I’ll still be teaching classes Mon, Wed and Friday: see details on www.betterway2be.com

Charter for Compassion – Karen Armstrong

October 13, 2009

This is over an hour long: great if you have the time. http://fora.tv/2009/08/14/Karen_Armstrong_Charter_for_Compassion

Well worth having a look at. I don’t think it takes you to be religious to see the sense in it.

This is her TED version (about 21min)

10 min plan – no.5

October 11, 2009
Adho mukha virasana

Adho mukha virasana

Starting as before: moving from AM virasana into AM svanasana repeat several times, before walking the hands back from AM Svanasana into Uttansana (check no.2 for reminders).  Take about 4-5min…take your time. Observe without judgement, without justification.

Virabhadrasana  II – 2min.  Start and finish in Tadasana. Be aware of what your body remembers from class, rather than remembering with your head. As before, if this is new to you, don’t hold it long (20seconds or less). Repeat it several times to the right and the left. Bring your questions to the class.

Virabhadrasana II

Utthita parsvakonasana

‘Intense  lateral stretch’  from the outside edge of the back foot right the  way thru to the fingertips.  Don’t forget the back leg. Try to find a way of working the legs that encourages the hips to open more…

Dandasana – as before. Sit on a  block if you need to. Bring the top of your sacrum forward and ‘grow’ your  spine. Sternum, collarbones and shoulderblades working as one unit.

Breakfast Club rests for autumn and winter

October 7, 2009

I think this has come to a natural end for this year. The last sunday in September was glorious, sunny and hot. The first sunday in October was a bit water-logged.

Let’s get back to it in spring. Give me a shout in spring if I’m not quick enough for you…

Green roofs save on carbon overheads

October 5, 2009

‘Green roofs are not just a load of greenwash. That’s according to a new study which has measured the amount of carbon absorbed by 13 different green roofs.

Getter’s team examined 12 existing green roofs and grew their own Sedum-covered roof. They found that the roofs absorbed up to 375 grams per square metre over the two years of their study.

That may not sound like much, but it adds up. If a city the size of Detroit, Michigan, with around a million inhabitants, were to switch to green roofs, it would remove as much carbon from the atmosphere as taking 10,000 mid-sized SUVs and trucks off the road for a year.

There is a catch…’
